The technique
What it is
A way of placing lip filler, not a different product. Small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler are placed vertically, from the base of the lip upward toward the border. The effect is height rather than projection: taller, more defined lips with a lifted cupid's bow, staying relatively flat from the side. Done conservatively, it looks surprisingly natural.

Who it suits, and who it does not
It tends to suit people who want height and definition, have some natural lip to work with, and prefer a flatter profile.
It is not for everyone, and saying so is part of our job. Very thin lips may need height built slowly over more than one visit, or classic enhancement first. If you love a soft, full, pouty look, classic filler gets you closer. If you have had a lot of filler before, we may suggest letting it settle, or dissolving some, first.
We do not treat anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, with an active cold sore or infection near the lips, or with a past reaction to hyaluronic acid filler. We review your health history privately at consultation.

On the day
How the treatment works
We numb the lips first, and most fillers also contain a local anaesthetic. Tiny amounts are placed in vertical lines, checked from the front and side as we go. It takes about an hour. Many people reach their ideal shape over two sessions a few weeks apart, which keeps it natural and lets you decide how far to go.

Cold compresses, sleeping slightly raised and skipping hard exercise, alcohol and heat for a day or two all help. If anything worries you, call us.
We would rather undertreat you twice than overtreat you once.
Avoiding the overdone look
This is one of the most recognisable looks on social media, which is exactly why restraint matters. The overdone version comes from doing too much in one session. We place less than you might expect, review at two weeks and add only if you want more. Because it is hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved if you change your mind.

What is the Russian lip technique?

How is it different from regular lip filler?
Classic lip filler adds volume, so the lips project further forward. The Russian technique uses the same kind of filler placed to lift and define, so lips look taller from the front and flatter from the side. Neither is better; they create different shapes.
Will it make my lips look wider?
No. It is designed to add height rather than width, keeping the lips close to their natural width.
How much swelling should I expect, and for how long?
More than with classic filler. It is most noticeable for one to two days, eases over three to four, and most people look close to normal within a week. The final result settles at about two weeks.
How long do results last?
Typically six to twelve months, depending on the product, the amount and your metabolism. Lips move a lot, so they break filler down faster than other areas. A small top-up keeps the shape.
Is it suitable if I have naturally thin lips?
Sometimes, but it may take longer. Very thin lips may need height built over more than one session, or may suit classic enhancement first. We will tell you honestly at your consultation.

Can it be dissolved if I do not like it?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you change your mind or want to adjust the shape.
Is it more painful than standard lip filler?
Most people find it similar. The lips are numbed first and most fillers contain a local anaesthetic, so it feels like pressure and small pinches. The swelling afterwards is usually more noticeable than the treatment.
